The CertifHy Bulletin - Fall 2024 Edition

The European Commission (EC) issued new guidance on the targets for the consumption of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) in the industry and transport sectors.

On September 2nd, the European Commission (EC) issued new guidance on the targets for the consumption of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) in the industry and transport sectors. This publication elaborates on specific aspects of the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), which aims to drive decarbonization throughout the European Union (EU) by promoting the use of energy from renewable sources, including RFNFO hydrogen and e-fuels.

The document gives special attention to the uptake of renewables in industry, which accounts for roughly 25% of energy consumption in the EU. Among other elements, Articles 22a and 22b of the revised RED include provisions to incentivize and obligate Member States to transition toward the use of renewable energy as fuel or feedstock for industrial production processes. This notice strives to offer additional guidance for transposing and implementing those clauses, namely by clarifying the procedure for calculating and fulfilling sectoral consumption targets.

The Commission-issued document also emphasizes the critical role of hydrogen derivatives like ammonia and methanol for achieving industry decarbonization targets, and moreover, highlights the potential impacts on exporting and importing Member States. To read the full document, follow this link.

For producers and consumers looking to contribute to industry targets in their respective Member States, our CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme provides a clear path forward, and our other services — pre-certification, RFNBO training, and membership — grant additional support to those commendable efforts.
