CertifHy Welcomes Bureau Veritas as Official Certification Body for CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme

Brussels, 22/09/25 CertifHy is happy to announce that Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification, has been officially designated as an authorized certification body for the CertifHy EU RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) Voluntary Scheme. This collaboration expands the reach of CertifHy’s certification framework, bringing a trusted, independent partner into the ecosystem to support the rapidly growing market for certified renewable hydrogen.

Bureau Veritas has been a key partner since 2023, providing certification for the CertifHy Non-Governmental Certification (NGC) Scheme, which tracks the origin and environmental attributes of hydrogen produced and consumed across Europe. The new recognition for the CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme strengthens this partnership and provides a critical service for both European producers and international importers who must comply with EU regulations.

The CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme: A Framework for Trust and Transparency

The CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme provides a robust framework for certifying renewable fuels from non-biological sources, primarily renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. These fuels are generated using renewable electricity from sources like wind, solar, and hydropower, offering a crucial path for decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to abate. Unlike biofuels, they do not rely on biomass, ensuring an unrestricted feedstock supply.

The scheme is fully aligned with the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and recognized by the European Commission. It is specifically designed to ensure supply chain transparency and traceability, verifying the renewable power supply and the resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Adhering to strict principles like additionality—guaranteeing that renewable electricity comes from new, dedicated sources—and the temporal and geographical alignment between electricity generation and hydrogen production, the program ensures a minimum 70% reduction in GHG emissions compared to fossil fuels. This rigorous process is vital for building stakeholder trust and helping companies confidently demonstrate compliance with the EU RED mandates.

A Strategic Step Towards a Certified Hydrogen Economy

The addition of Bureau Veritas to the list of authorized certification bodies is a significant step forward for the global hydrogen and e-fuels market. It provides a credible, independent resource for producers and consumers seeking to ensure their operations meet the highest standards of sustainability and compliance.

This collaboration enhances CertifHy’s ability to facilitate global trade in certified fuels by adding a partner with extensive global reach and experience. With its network of over 7,400 auditors and approximately 300,000 annual audits, Bureau Veritas provides the scale and expertise required to meet the growing demand for verification services in the clean energy sector. This partnership empowers businesses to confidently navigate the complexities of energy transition while upholding the rigorous standards of the EU.

This second recognition is a testament of Bureau Veritas commitment to providing trust and transparency in the clean hydrogen and low emissions fuels sector. Bureau Veritas is a strategic partner supporting hydrogen energy stakeholders throughout the entire value chain. The EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme provides the transparency needed for renewable hydrogen and its derived fuels to fulfill their potential in Europe's energy transition.
