Brussels, 22/05/25 – CertifHy is pleased to confirm that Hy2Gen’s hydrogen production site in Werlte, Germany, has been officially certified under the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme. This marks the first fully operational hydrogen production site globally to obtain certification under this scheme, representing a significant milestone for the renewable hydrogen market.
The site is also the first industrial-scale e-methane production facility in the world, moving beyond laboratory-scale projects and into full commercial operation.

The certification was awarded following a thorough audit conducted by TÜV SÜD, one of the certification bodies recently recognized by CertifHy and authorized to carry out audits under the scheme. The site’s hydrogen production is powered by renewable electricity, in full compliance with the requirements set by the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive.
Since receiving recognition from the European Commission in December 2024, CertifHy has been actively enabling certification bodies to perform audits and issue certificates, confirming that renewable hydrogen production complies with the highest environmental and sustainability standards.
“The issuance of this first certificate under the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme to a production site is a clear signal that renewable hydrogen production is moving from pilot projects to full commercial operations,” said Matthieu Boisson, Managing Director at CertifHy. “It validates the robustness and applicability of the certification framework we have developed and encourages more producers and market players to engage confidently with renewable hydrogen.”
CertifHy remains committed to supporting the growth of a transparent, trustworthy certification ecosystem that fosters confidence and facilitates the market uptake of renewable hydrogen throughout Europe and beyond.
