Renewable Hydrogen Projects Advance with Scale and Substance
Published 30th July 2025 by Matthieu Boisson, Managing Director of CertifHy.
From our vantage point at CertifHy, we see something the headlines often overlook: a growing number of robust, well-prepared hydrogen projects steadily advancing toward certification and deployment. These aren’t media soundbites; they’re strategic efforts backed by technical depth, financial commitment, and real capacity in the making.
This journey of tangible progress began with pioneering steps. We were immensely proud to issue the very first certification under the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme to Tyczka Hydrogen on April 15, 2025, marking a critical milestone for renewable hydrogen trading and distribution. This was quickly followed by Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH’s Atlantis plant in Werlte, which became the first certified producer, now officially delivering RFNBO-compliant e-methane – indeed, the first e-methane production facility certified RFNBO in the world.
These foundational achievements have been swiftly built upon. More recently, we’ve seen Lhyfe’s Bouin site in France and Abo Energy’s Hünfeld-Michelsrombach facility in Germany also achieve full RFNBO certification, further expanding the validated capacity. Beyond these immediate certifications, we continue to engage with exciting ventures like the EVREC project in Canada, a mega-scale initiative producing RFNBO-certified green ammonia for export to Europe, and AM Green’s Kakinada plant in India, which notably is the first Indian project to receive CertifHy precertification, and which recently joined us at our webinar to share their insights. These global examples underscore the diverse and significant efforts underway.
A Streamlined Certification Ecosystem
As projects scale, the certification ecosystem itself is evolving to meet demand. Our recently announced partnership with Atmen, now a designated Compliance Technology Provider (CTP), marks a pivotal turning point. Their platform digitizes and simplifies the certification process, integrating live compliance modeling, document generation, and emissions tracking. This vital collaboration is part of a broader effort to build an ecosystem of high-quality providers that make compliance not just possible, but practical and transparent for all economic operators.
The Low-Carbon Horizon
Adding another layer of clarity and opportunity is the new European Commission’s Delegated Act on low-carbon hydrogen, adopted on July 8th. This long-awaited legislation introduces a clear methodology for assessing GHG emissions savings and defines low-carbon hydrogen for the first time at EU level. Recognizing its significance, CertifHy is already preparing to launch a dedicated scheme for low-carbon certification, complete with robust working groups and governance structures to match.
Optimism for the Path Ahead
We know the road ahead won’t be easy, and challenges remain. But we also know this industry is moving decisively in the right direction. The quiet, consistent progress we see every day – on the ground, in the data, and in the strategic decisions of project developers – is a profound reason for optimism. At CertifHy, we remain committed to supporting that progress with clarity, credibility, and collaboration, building a truly sustainable hydrogen economy.
