Brussels, 06/05/25 – CertifHy, continuing its commitment to advancing the sustainable hydrogen market, is pleased to announce the official recognition of SGS as an approved certification body for the CertifHy EU RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) Voluntary Scheme. This expansion of our network further strengthens the integrity and reliability of sustainable hydrogen certification.
This recognition authorizes SGS to conduct audits under the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme, enabling hydrogen producers and suppliers to demonstrate compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED). SGS will now provide the following services:
- Precertification audits
- Initial certification audits
- Recertification audits
These audits are crucial for ensuring that hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives meet the stringent sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction criteria set by the EU.

“We are delighted to welcome SGS to our network of recognized certification bodies,” stated Matthieu Boisson, Managing Director at CertifHy. “Their expertise and commitment to quality assurance will play a vital role in supporting the growth of the sustainable hydrogen market.”
Ensuring Robust and Reliable Certification
Recognized certification bodies like SGS are essential for maintaining the integrity of the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme. Their independent, third-party audits ensure that hydrogen production processes adhere to the highest standards.
SGS will provide:
- Expert auditors trained and credentialed by the CertifHy Academy.
- Audits conducted in accordance with globally recognized standards, including ISO 17065 and ISO 14065.
- Comprehensive evaluations of production processes to verify compliance.
- Detailed reports and recommendations on compliance and certification eligibility.
Maintaining Rigorous Standards
CertifHy’s recognition process requires certification bodies to meet strict eligibility criteria, including relevant accreditation, a formal cooperation agreement, certified auditors, and adherence to standardized auditing protocols. This rigorous approach ensures the reliability and trust of the CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme.

About CertifHy: Founded in 2014, CertifHy is a frontrunner in the realm of renewable hydrogen and e-fuels’ certification, providing a comprehensive suite of tools to empower stakeholders engaged in the energy transition. It operates two schemes — the CertifHy EU Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) Voluntary Scheme and the CertifHy Non-Governmental Certificate (NGC) Scheme — which aim to verify the sustainability and origin of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives. CertifHy also offers pre-certification, which familiarizes companies with the data collection and documentation process required for official certification, and an in-house learning platform — CertifHy Academy — to equip Economic Operators and Certification Bodies with the expertise needed to navigate the complex landscape of hydrogen certification. It fosters collaboration through its Stakeholder Platform, which invites representatives of the industry, government, and academia to shape the future development of hydrogen certification systems. Together, CertifHy’s robust certification schemes and knowledge-building resources pave the way for a cleaner energy future.
