Hydrogen certification consortium CertifHy™ has signed an MoU with global certification company Roundtable on Sustainable Materials (RSB) to establish an Impact Alliance accelerating the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO), to meet the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive. CertifHy’s hydrogen certification scheme, created at the request of the European Commission, is aimed at enabling the different legislations in Europe and beyond by improving the ability of hydrogen project developers to offer products that meet market standards. Certificates reflecting the carbon content and processes associated with production can help supply expansion and enable projects meeting stricter production criteria to stand out as providing clean hydrogen.

The MoU also includes plans for CertifHy and RSB to develop offerings to prove compliance with the German global hydrogen import scheme, H2Global. While CertifHy is initially focused on hydrogen and synthetic fuels consumed in Europe, including imports, the consortium has a global ambition and will create certification systems where needed. Policy makers and legislators have mentioned certification globally, but its importance to the hydrogen market has raised questions regarding consistency in certification programs across different markets.
