HyNetherlands selected CertifHy™ for a RFNBO certification pilot of its e-methanol production

HyNetherlands has chosen CertifHy™ for a certification pilot of its e-methanol production. The “Fit for 55” package and the REPowerEU plan have set ambitious targets for the production of renewable hydrogen and for the use of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) in the industrial and transport sector by 2030. In order to meet these targets and comply with requirements set out in RED II, producers of RFNBOs will need to ensure their production meets certain criteria.

CertifHy™ is developing a Voluntary Scheme that outlines the rules and criteria that RFNBO-producing plants must meet in order to be certified according to RED II. The certification pilot is a way for producers to understand whether or not their existing or planned processes and plants are compliant with these requirements and identify any potential gaps in the production process or supply chain. The pilot is being run in collaboration with an auditor recognized by CertifHy™ and is relevant for plants producing RFNBOs and derivatives within Europe or outside Europe for the European import market at different stages of maturity.

HyNetherlands, which launched in 2019, aims to contribute to the decarbonization of the industrial and transportation sectors in the region by scaling up renewable hydrogen production. The first phase of the project, set to begin in 2025, involves a capacity of 100MW, with plans to increase to 1.85 GW in the early 2030s. CertifHy™ has run a certification pilot for the HyNetherlands plant in collaboration with TÜV SÜD, the recognized auditor. The audit was run according to the CertifHy™ EU Voluntary Scheme criteria to assess whether the plans and processes for the production of e-methanol could be considered RFNBO compliant as per RED II and Delegated Acts.
