More developments around Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for Hydrogen in Europe

Spain’s first 56 MWh of renewable hydrogen guarantees of origin were issued at the beginning of June, from Iberdrola’s Planta Hidrógeno Verde in Barcelona. In January 2024, the Iberian energy TSO Enagas had announced the launch of its registry for GOs for renewable gases, including hydrogen, joining a growing number of Member States having officially appointed entities to operate a registry and issue GOs for RFNBO hydrogen.

  • In January 2024, the German Federal Cabinet adopted an ordinance designated the Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) as the entity responsible for the issuance of GOs for gas, heating and cooling from renewable sources.
  • At the end of 2023, Gasgrid Finland was appointed as the Registry Operator and Issuing Body for gas and hydrogen GOs in Finland.
  • JSC Conexus Baltic Grid, a Latvian Transmission System Operator (TSO), has also been appointed to implement a GO system for biogas and hydrogen in Latvia.
  • The Netherlands was the first Member State to designate Vertigas, a subsidiary of Gasunie, as the Registry Operator and Issuing Body for hydrogen GOs.

CertifHy has been operating a Non-Governmental Certification (NGC) scheme since 2014. We will continue to provide solutions for our industry partners in Member States that do not yet have operational GO systems for hydrogen.
