Hydrogen for Heavy Duty Vehicles : the European Parliament adopts stricter emissions targets
In April 2024, the European Parliament endorsed a provisional agreement related to the new Regulation on CO2 Emission Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles. The rule expands the scope of an existing regulation, and requires all heavy-duty vehicles to meet increasingly strict CO2 emissions reduction targets: 45% by 2030; 65% by 2035; 90% by 2040.
The Regulation aims to push the decarbonisation of the transport sector by enforcing car manufacturers to sell more zero-emission trucks and buses that run on batteries, fuel cells, or hydrogen combustion engines in order to meet these sectoral targets.
It also has a counterpart in infrastructure planning, The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which sets binding targets for the deployment of hydrogen refueling stations along the TEN-T core network from 2030 onwards. These two texts provide the basis for scaling-up hydrogen-fueled mobility.
CertifHy will soon hold a public Working Group to reflect on questions surrounding the certification of hydrogen refueling stations.. Stay tuned!
